Overview

Emma Bengtsson is a Swedish chef who has made a significant impact on the culinary world.

Born on August 27, 1981, in Falkenberg, Halland County, Sweden, Emma Bengtsson initially had aspirations of becoming a fighter pilot. She even practiced at shooting ranges with her father in preparation for a military career. However, her path took an exciting turn when she discovered her passion for cooking, inspired by her grandmother’s culinary skills. She went on to study at the International Restaurant School in Stockholm, where her culinary journey truly began.

After graduating, Bengtsson interned at Edsbacka Krog, the only restaurant in Sweden at the time to hold two Michelin stars. It was during this period that she realized her love for pastry and continued working at Edsbacka Krog for four years.
She then moved to Operakällaren, located within the Royal Swedish Opera, where she worked as a pastry chef for the following five years.
Emma Bengtsson’s journey took a transatlantic turn when she joined the renowned Aquavit restaurant in New York City under executive chef Marcus Jernmark. Initially, she was brought in as a pastry chef, but fate had other plans. When Jernmark left, Bengtsson was offered the executive chef position. Under her leadership, Aquavit not only retained its Michelin star but also gained a second star, making her the first Swedish woman to hold two Michelin stars. She achieved this remarkable feat in the United States, following in the footsteps of Dominique Crenn.
In 2016, Bengtsson expanded her culinary influence by opening a second Aquavit restaurant, this time in London. The London establishment, while larger, maintains the same commitment to Nordic cuisine. Bengtsson’s dedication to her craft and her desire to create exceptional dining experiences continue to inspire chefs worldwide.
Emma Bengtsson’s journey exemplifies creativity, determination, and a love for innovative cuisine.
