Overview
Cristina Bowerman is an Italian chef who has made significant contributions to the culinary world.
Born in Cerignola, Apulia, Italy, Cristina Bowerman initially pursued foreign languages and studied law. However, her path took an exciting turn when she moved to Austin, Texas, where she worked as a graphic designer. It was during this time that her passion for cooking began to flourish.
Bowerman decided to delve into the culinary arts, attending the University of Texas at Austin and Le Cordon Bleu. She credits chef Egil Valentin as her most influential teacher and gained valuable experience at David Bull’s restaurant, 5 Diamonds.
In 2006, Bowerman returned to Italy and joined the Glass Hostaria restaurant in Rome. Initially, the restaurant faced challenges—locals would visit only on weekends and order traditional dishes. However, Bowerman persisted, introducing new creations. Her dedication paid off when Glass Hostaria was awarded a Michelin star in 2010, making her the only woman to receive one that year.
After her Michelin success, Bowerman opened Romeo Chef & Baker in a former warehouse in Testaccio. She also launched Giulietta Pizzeria next door. Her culinary endeavors continue to bridge the gap between Italy and the United States, as she splits her time between Rome and Austin.
Cristina Bowerman’s journey exemplifies creativity, determination, and a love for innovative cuisine.
