Vicky Lau, a culinary entrepreneur born in Hong Kong, has made significant contributions to the culinary world.
Hong Kong-native Vicky Lau moved to the United States at the age of 15, where she attended a boarding school in Connecticut. Initially, her aspirations leaned toward becoming a fighter pilot, but fate had other plans. She attended New York University, studying graphic communication. After working in advertising for six years and becoming a graphic designer at a design agency, she returned to Hong Kong in 2010 with a newfound passion for cooking. Lau enrolled in a nine-month course at Le Cordon Bleu in Bangkok, Thailand, where she earned a Grand Diplôme.
Following her graduation from Le Cordon Bleu, Vicky Lau pursued a culinary career at Cepage, a restaurant awarded one Michelin star. There, she honed her skills under the guidance of Chef Sebastien Lepinoy.
After a year, Lau established her own restaurant, TATE Dining Room & Bar, originally positioned on Elgin Street in Central, Hong Kong. The restaurant received its first Michelin star in 2013. Initially, the cuisine featured a fusion of French and Japanese influences. However, in 2016, the restaurant relocated to a larger venue on Hollywood Road, where Lau began incorporating more elements of her Chinese heritage into the menu. TATE Dining Room became a member of the Relais & Châteaux association in 2018. In 2021, it achieved two Michelin stars, making Vicky Lau the first female chef in Asia to achieve this level of distinction.
MORA: Lau’s culinary ventures expanded with the founding of MORA in 2021. Located on Upper Lascar Row, a historic street, MORA focuses on dishes that highlight the versatility of soy. Since 2022, MORA has held a Michelin Green Star, reflecting its commitment to sustainability in its operations.
In 2015, Vicky Lau was named Asia’s Best Female Chef by Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants.
In 2021, she received The Best Chef Food Art Award.
She serves as a board member of Feeding Hong Kong.
In 2023, she was honored as Chef of the Year by Tatler.
